This creamy Honeydew Green Tea Smoothie is a refreshing, fruity drink made with frozen honeydew, green tea, banana, avocado, oat milk, and a touch of maple syrup. It’s thick, creamy, naturally sweetened, and the perfect way to cool down on a warm day! 🍈☀️

If you remember Panera’s discontinued frozen honeydew green tea drink, this smoothie was inspired by those refreshing honeydew and green tea flavors—but made with simple, wholesome ingredients and real honeydew melon. I used to LOVE their honeydew green tea in college during late night study sessions and was so sad when they discontinued it. I am SO EXCITED to share my own version with you, it tastes very similar to what I remember (from 20 years ago 😳😆) and I can’t wait for you to try it! 🤩🥳

Frozen honeydew gives this smoothie its sweet, refreshing melon flavor, while frozen banana and avocado create an incredibly creamy texture without any dairy. Green tea adds a light, refreshing flavor that pairs perfectly with the honeydew, and just a tablespoon of maple syrup brings everything together. It’s simple, delicious, naturally gluten-free and vegan, and comes together in just a few minutes!

Why You’ll Love This Honeydew Smoothie

There are so many reasons to love this creamy green smoothie:

  • Made with real honeydew. Frozen honeydew is the star instead of honeydew-flavored syrups or powders.
  • Incredibly creamy. Frozen banana and avocado give this smoothie a thick, velvety consistency.
  • Naturally sweetened. Just one tablespoon of pure maple syrup adds a little extra sweetness.
  • Refreshing green tea flavor. Chilled green tea adds a subtle earthy flavor that balances the sweetness of the fruit.
  • Naturally gluten-free and vegan. No dairy or gluten-containing ingredients needed.
  • Quick and easy. Add everything to a blender and blend!

Ingredients

Frozen honeydew melon. Frozen honeydew is the star of this smoothie, giving it its refreshing melon flavor, natural sweetness, and icy consistency. Use ripe, sweet honeydew for the best flavor.

Green tea. Brewed and chilled green tea adds a subtle, refreshing tea flavor that complements the sweet honeydew beautifully. Make sure the tea is completely chilled before adding it to your blender.

Oat milk. Oat milk gives the smoothie additional creaminess while keeping it completely dairy-free. I like using an unsweetened oat milk so you can control the sweetness with maple syrup.

Frozen banana. Half of a frozen banana thickens the smoothie and adds natural sweetness and creaminess without overpowering the honeydew flavor.

Avocado. Avocado makes this smoothie especially smooth and velvety. Its mild flavor blends right in while also enhancing the beautiful natural green color.

Pure maple syrup. One tablespoon of maple syrup adds just enough extra sweetness to bring out the flavor of the honeydew. Depending on how ripe and sweet your melon is, you can adjust this amount to taste, or choose to omit it.

Matcha powder (optional). If you want to enhance the green color you can add a little matcha green tea powder- but it’s totally optional.

Dairy-free whipped cream. Also optional, but makes a great topping to take this smoothie from breakfast to dessert!

How to Freeze Honeydew for Smoothies

For the best smoothie texture, start with ripe, sweet & flavorful honeydew. Remove the rind and seeds, then cut the melon into chunks.

Arrange the honeydew pieces in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer the pieces to a freezer-safe container or bag.

Freezing the pieces individually first prevents them from turning into one giant frozen block, making them much easier to measure and blend.

How to Make a Honeydew Green Tea Smoothie

This smoothie couldn’t be easier to make!

Cut the honeydew melon into chunks, removing the rind and seeds, and freeze in a single layer on a parchment lined baking sheet the day/night before. After frozen, you can add to a gallon bag to keep in your freezer. Also make sure to freeze a banana the night before!

Brew the green tea ahead of time and allow it to cool completely in the refrigerator. You can also do this the night before for quicker prep in the morning.

Add the chilled green tea, oat milk, frozen banana, frozen honeydew, avocado, and maple syrup to a high-speed blender. Blend on high until completely smooth and creamy, stopping to scrape down the sides as necessary. Pour into glasses and serve immediately. Top with dairy-free whipped cream if desired, although it’s delicious without!

Tips for the Best Honeydew Green Tea Smoothie

Use ripe honeydew. This makes a huge difference! Since honeydew is the main flavor, a ripe, sweet melon will produce the best-tasting smoothie.

Freeze the honeydew. Using frozen honeydew instead of using fresh honeydew and ice gives you a creamier smoothie with a more concentrated melon flavor.

Use frozen banana. Frozen banana adds creaminess without requiring ice, which can water down the smoothie.

Don’t use too much banana. Half of a banana is plenty. Adding a whole banana can easily overpower honeydew’s more delicate flavor.

Chill the tea first. Don’t pour warm tea into your blender with the frozen fruit. It will melt the fruit and make your smoothie much thinner.

Adjust the sweetness to taste. The sweetness of honeydew varies considerably. Taste your smoothie after blending and add a little more maple syrup if needed.

Use a high speed, high quality blender for the best smoothie texture.

FAQ’s

What Kind of Green Tea Should I Use?

A traditional green tea works great in this recipe. There’s rumors around the internet that Panera used their passion fruit green tea, so you could also try that, though I think regular green tea tastes perfect.

Can I use fresh honeydew?

I recommend using frozen honeydew- frozen honeydew creates a much thicker and creamier smoothie. If you use fresh honeydew, you may want to add additional frozen banana to achieve a colder, thicker consistency.

Does this smoothie taste like avocado?

The avocado flavor is very mild. Honeydew and banana, provide most of the flavor, while avocado primarily contributes creaminess and texture.

Does green tea have caffeine?

Traditional green tea naturally contains caffeine, although the amount varies depending on the tea and brewing method. You can use decaffeinated green tea if you prefer.
