This Decaf Iced Oatmilk Chai Latte is so creamy, and I especially love this iced chai latte topped with oat whipped topping and a sprinkle of cinnamon!
Chai tea is a black tea that originated in India, created for the traditional medicinal practice, Ayurveda, for it’s many health benefits. The name chai is actually the Hindi word for “tea” stemming from the Chinese word for tea, “cha”. You may also know chai tea as “masala chai” meaning “spiced tea”.
Chai spices will vary by region, but usually includes spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger, star anise and black peppercorns. Milk and sugar were later additions to the world-famous drink.
Chai is a very bold, strong-flavored tea. Depending on the brand and spices used, the tea can include many different flavors, with the boldest being notes of cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and cloves. Chai is strong and warm, but slightly sweet. Sometimes chai tea can be a bit spicy if there’s higher quantities of black pepper and ginger. I prefer a milder masala chai.
Chai tea is fairly common and easy to find. Decaf chai tea may be a bit more difficult to find, I purchase mine on Amazon. When shopping for chai tea, there are a few key things to look for in a chai tea:
Look for plastic-free tea bags! Did you know there is often plastic in tea bags? 😡 By using tea bags that contain plastic, you then ingest microplastics, which is becoming an increasingly big problem.
Look for natural tea bags that aren’t bleached. If the tea bag is white in color, most likely it has been bleached, also not great for consumption. Tea bags that are a more natural beige color are best to use. They are often compostable as well! 🤩
Buy organic and non-GMO if possible. I buy most of my food organic these days. Purchasing organic also helps avoid pesticides used on crops, another thing we don’t want to ingest.
Decaf chai tea bags. Black tea, most often what chai is made with, contains caffeine. There are brands that make decaf chai tea though! So if you’re sensitive to caffeine like me, this iced chai latte is still on the table! You will need 2 tea bags for this recipe.
Oat milk. I used oat milk in this iced chai latte recipe to enhance the creaminess and thickness of this chilly beverage. You will need 1 cup of oat milk.
Creamer. This recipe calls for ½ cup of dairy-free coffee creamer. I used a dairy-free oat creamer. You can use your favorite plant-based creamer if you can’t find an oat-based creamer.
Ice. You will need a cup of ice to make this iced chai latte.
Whipped cream. Whipped topping is completely optional, but so so yummy! I used a canned oat whipped topping that I found at Whole Foods Market.
This iced beverage is so simple to make, you’ll be making it again and again!
Step 1. Start by adding two decaf chai tea bags to a mug or glass measuring cup filled with 1 cup of oatmilk. Add ½ cup of dairy-free creamer to the same glass and microwave for 2 minutes.
Step 2. Remove from the microwave and stir the bags into the milk, covering them fully by the milk, and then allow them to steep for at least 10 minutes, stirring and gently squeezing the tea bags against the side of the glass occasionally.
Step 3. After 10 minutes, remove the tea bags, gently squeezing them to get all the flavor. Fill a glass with ice. Pour the chai milk over the ice.
Optionally top with diary-free whipped cream, sprinkle with cinnamon and enjoy right away!
Yes! You can use any plant milk you’d like! Cashew milk, coconut milk, and oat milk make the creamiest chai latte, but you can also use almond milk.
Yes! If caffeine isn’t bothersome to you, feel free to use regular chai tea instead of decaf. I am extremely sensitive to caffeine so I chose to use decaf chai tea in this recipe.
By using creamer there is no need to add any additional sugar, if the creamer you use contains a sweetener. Creamer also takes the creaminess to the next level. If you use unsweetened non-dairy creamer you may want to add ½ tablespoon of maple syrup or use another sweetener of choice, adjusting it to taste per your preference.
