This Purple Halloween White Hot Chocolate is a fun and festive drink made with creamy oat milk, vegan white chocolate, and naturally colored purple with black carrot powder. Top each mug with a generous swirl of vegan whipped cream, Halloween sprinkles, and candy eyeballs for a spooky-cute treat that’s perfect for Halloween parties, movie nights, or an after-trick-or-treating warm-up.
I don’t know about where you live, but here in Ohio it is inevitable that Halloween is always cold and rainy. One year we even had snow! So hot chocolate on Halloween is 100% appropriate! 🙃
Unlike traditional hot chocolate, this version skips cocoa powder and uses white chocolate as the base, allowing the gorgeous purple color to really shine. It’s creamy, sweet, vanilla-forward, and incredibly easy to make with just a handful of ingredients.
Why You’ll Love This Purple Hot Chocolate
- Naturally purple thanks to black carrot powder.
- Gluten-free and vegan.
- Rich and creamy with a sweet white chocolate flavor.
- Ready in about 10 minutes.
- Easy to customize with your favorite Halloween toppings.
- A fun Halloween drink for both kids and adults.
- Perfect for Halloween parties and festive movie nights.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Oat milk. Oat milk provides a rich, creamy base while keeping this hot chocolate dairy-free. You can substitute another unsweetened plant-based milk if desired, such as almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, rice milk, etc., however, I feel like oat milk offers the creamiest hot chocolate. I used unsweetened oat milk.
Black carrot powder. I use black carrot powder to give the hot chocolate its beautiful purple hue. I ended up using 4 teaspoons to achieve the purple color I was going for. You may use more or less based on your preference. And no, the final hot chocolate doesn’t taste like carrots 😜.
Dairy-free white chocolate. White chocolate gives this drink its hot-chocolate sweetness and creamy texture without covering up the purple color the way cocoa powder would. The dairy-free white chocolate chips I used are sweetened so I didn’t add any additional sweetener, but if the white chocolate or white chocolate chips you use don’t include any added sugar I would suggest adding maple syrup.
Vanilla extract. A splash of vanilla complements the white chocolate and makes the drink taste extra cozy.
Salt. Just a pinch balances the sweetness and brings out the vanilla and white chocolate flavors.
Non-dairy whipped cream. For that classic, decadent hot chocolate topping.
Halloween sprinkles. I love a combination of orange, purple, black, and nonparelis sprinkles. Search for dye-free sprinkles to keep this recipe naturally colored!
Candy eyeballs. The finishing touch that instantly turns an ordinary purple drink into Halloween hot chocolate! I used my own homemade Chocolate Candy Googly Eyes for a cleaner ingredient, dye-free option.

How to Make Purple Halloween Hot Chocolate
Make the Purple Concentrate
Heat a small saucepan over medium heat. Add 3 tablespoons of the oat milk and the black carrot powder directly to a small saucepan. Whisk until the powder is completely dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
💡 Starting with this concentrated mixture helps the powder incorporate evenly into the milk rather than leaving little clumps floating throughout your hot chocolate. And there’s no extra bowl to wash!
Add the Remaining Milk
Gradually whisk in the remaining oat milk. Add just a little at first, whisking until smooth, and then pour in the rest. Warm until the milk is steaming but avoid bringing it to a boil. It should look bubbly like this:
Make It Creamy
Add the vegan white chocolate and whisk until completely melted. Continue whisking until the hot chocolate is silky & creamy and evenly purple. Add the vanilla and a small pinch of salt. Taste and stir in maple syrup if the white chocolate you use doesn’t contain any sugar.
Decorate!
Pour the purple hot chocolate into mugs and top each one with a generous swirl of vegan whipped cream. Finish with Halloween-colored sprinkles and candy eyeballs.
How to Get the Prettiest Purple Color
One of the best parts of this recipe is that you can create a gorgeous Halloween color without reaching for purple food dye. The white chocolate is also important here. Using regular cocoa or dark chocolate won’t allow any purple color to show through. You may add more or less black carrot powder depending on the hue of purple you’re going for.
💡I have not tried any other type of milk, but the variety or brand of plant-based milk you use might also have an effect on the color purple your hot chocolate will be.
Halloween Topping Ideas
This is where you can really have fun with the recipe. Try decorating your whipped cream with:
- Orange, black, purple, and green sprinkles
- Candy eyeballs
- Mini pumpkin sprinkles
- Bat or ghost sprinkles
- Vegan mini marshmallows
- Vegan white chocolate shavings
- A light dusting of purple sweet potato powder
- Halloween-shaped candies
Chocolate Candy Googly Eyes (dairy-free!)
These DIY Chocolate Candy Googly Eyes are super easy to make and are a great alternative to the store-bought candy googly eye sprinkles for all your festive desserts. They are made with dairy-free white and dark chocolate chips and are easy to customize to any size googly eyes you'd like!
Tips for the Best Vegan Halloween Hot Chocolate
Keep the heat low. You want the milk hot and steamy without vigorously boiling it.
Make the concentrate first. Whisking the black carrot powder with just 3 tablespoons of oat milk directly in the saucepan makes it much easier to get a smooth drink without lumps of powder.
Add the milk gradually. Whisk a little milk into your concentrate before adding the rest to prevent clumping.
Adjust the sweetness at the end. Vegan white chocolate brands vary considerably in sweetness, so taste the finished drink before adding maple syrup.
Serve it right away. The whipped cream will slowly melt into the warm hot chocolate, so add your toppings just before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does black carrot powder taste like carrots?
The flavor is quite mild when you’re only using a small amount. The white chocolate, vanilla, and creamy oat milk are the dominant flavors in this recipe. I did not taste any carrot flavor.
Can I used a different kind of purple powder?
I understand that black carrot powder may be hard to find. You may try to use purple sweet potato powder, however, I did make this purple hot chocolate with sweet potato powder and it actually turned blue instead of purple. I am not sure if it had something to do with using it in combination with oat milk, or heating it up, or what (a bit of a culinary experiment I might need to explore!). If you find another purple plant-based powder you’d like to try, just keep that in mind.
I love the additional health benefits of adding carrots to this hot chocolate, but alternatively, you may use a plant-based, dye-free liquid purple coloring.
Can I make it without white chocolate?
You can, but it won’t have quite the same rich hot chocolate flavor or creamy consistency. If you omit the white chocolate, you’ll also want to add maple syrup or another natural sweetener to taste.
Can I use another plant milk?
Yes. Soy, almond, coconut, rice, or another creamy dairy-free milk can be substituted for the oat milk. Just remember that the natural color of your milk can slightly affect the final purple shade.
Can I make it ahead of time?
Yes. Make the purple hot chocolate without the toppings and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat it gently in a saucepan over medium-low heat, whisking occasionally. Add the whipped cream, sprinkles, and candy eyeballs immediately before serving.
Can I make a larger batch for a Halloween party?
Absolutely. Simply double, triple, or quadruple the ingredients depending on how many people you’re serving. Keep the hot chocolate warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, and set up a Halloween hot chocolate bar with whipped cream, sprinkles, candy eyeballs, and other toppings.
