I’ll be the first to admit, I can count the number of times I’ve had fried pickles on one hand. I love pickles, I don’t love all of the greasiness that comes with frying them so I always forgo ordering them on the menu. But then the air fryer came out and boy was I excited to try making my own gluten-free vegan fried pickles at home! I even got my kids to eat pickles… it’s kind of an inside joke at home, but my hubby joked so much about pickles that they were afraid to try them, until now, of course! What’s not to love about this crunchy, fun little snack?!
Today I’ve teamed up with Calphalon using their Performance Cool Touch Air Fry Oven to make the perfectly healthy Gluten-Free Vegan Air Fryer Fried Pickles!
If you’re looking for a superior air fryer, the Calphalon Air Fry Oven is it! It preheats so quickly with Quartz Heat Technology and Turbo Convection and also provides even heat so that all the pickles get fried evenly. I’ve noticed that this air fry oven fries faster than any other air fryer ovens I have used, I mean, we’re talking fast! The Calphalon oven stays cool on the outside so I can feel confident with my kids helping me make these air fryer fried pickles too 🙂
The Calphalon Air Fry Oven has 12 preset cooking functions: Air Fry, Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies, Reheat, Dehydrate, Keep Warm, AND Bread Proof- which unlike just an air fryer, you can use this oven in multiple ways as well as even cooking multiple dishes at once. Another bonus is that It’s easy to clean with its non-stick interior, which some of my previous air fryer ovens were embarrassing how gross they got after using it just a few times. This air fry oven comes with a baking pan, 12″ pizza pan, air fry basket, wire rack, and removable crumb tray! It’s seriously top notch 😉
You will need dill pickle slices, gluten-free flour, a vegan egg wash made with flaxseed meal and plant milk, and the outer almond flour breading.
Start by preheating the air fry oven to 450 degrees. Then dry the pickles off with paper towels.
Next, toss each pickle slice in gluten-free 1:1 baking flour to coat it well.
We’re also forgoing the egg wash in this recipe and swapping it out with a flax meal + plant milk mixture, a vegan egg-wash substitute, so that the breading binds to the pickles and stays during frying. After tossing the pickle slices into the gluten-free flour, you’ll then coat each slice with the vegan “egg” wash.
And then finally coat each slice in the almond flour mixture. This “breading” is made with just 3 core plant-based, gluten-free ingredients: almond flour, smoked paprika, nutritional yeast, and then salt & pepper to taste.
Place each pickle on a parchment lined baking sheet until you finish breading all of the pickle slices.
Place the pickles on the air fryer basket, leaving enough room around each pickle slice then spray lightly with spray oil, such as olive, coconut, or avocado oil.
You’ll air fry these in the Calphalon Air Fry Oven for 12-15 minutes, until they start to turn golden brown. You’ll have to cook these in 2-3 batches, but they cook so fast that it’s such a quick and easy process.
For this fried pickle recipe, I’m whipping up a delicious Boom Boom-esque sauce, dairy-free of course! You’ll combine ketchup with vegan mayonnaise, pickle juice, onion and garlic powder, smoked paprika, and salt & pepper. It’s the perfect accompaniment to the fried pickles and actually uses some of the same ingredients so you don’t have to buy a whole bunch of items you’ll only use once 🙂
These Gluten-Free Vegan Air Fryer Fried Pickles are best enjoyed fresh out of the air fryer while they are the crispiest, but you can always re-air fry later on!
The Calphalon Performance Cool Touch Air Fry Oven can be purchased on Amazon.
