Have some Halloween fun with this Halloween Chocolate Covered Pretzel Board! A fun activity and snack to make with your kids for Halloween, perfect to serve at a Halloween party. Gluten-free pretzels are covered in either dairy-free dark or white chocolate, colored with plant-based food coloring and decorated with sprinkles, candy eyes, and pumpkin seeds for a spooky-cute Halloween snack!
My kids and I had so much fun making these little cuties! They’re easy to make, fun to eat, and they’re not some gross fingers or eyeballs made out of food 🤮. Sorry if that’s your thing at Halloween, but I’m more into the cutesie Halloween decorations and goodies.
Gluten-free pretzels. I used Quinn Gluten-Free Whole Grain Sea Salt Pretzel Twists, but feel free to use your favorite gluten-free pretzels, just as long as they are the twists and not the pretzel sticks.
Dairy-free white chocolate chips. These can be challenging to find. I buy mine on Amazon. There are a couple different brands, but my favorite brand is Enjoy Life Foods Mini White Baking Chips.
Dairy-free dark chocolate chips. You will mainly need semi-sweet chocolate chips for the owls, to coat them and then use the chips for the “eyebrows”. I recommend using these mini chocolate chips.
Candy eyes. While they aren’t my favorite things to eat because of the ingredients, they do bring these characters to life. I found an assortment of large, medium, and small candy eyes. Alternatively, you can make your own eyes with white/dark chocolate chips.
Food coloring. You will need purple, green, and orange food coloring. I don’t typically recommend using artificial food dyes, so if you can find plant-based food coloring that’s great! I like the Supernatural Brand for red and green, or you can also use green spirulina powder.
Raw pumpkin seeds. I used Go Raw Pumpkin Seeds for the owl noses and the leaf on the pumpkins. Toasted pumpkin seeds will be brown, so make sure they are raw (and green). You may also use your creativity and imagination and swap the pumpkin seeds for something else!
Sprinkles. You will need strand sprinkles for the one eyed monsters. My favorite come from Baking Time Club . Her sprinkles are adorable! They are also gluten-free, vegan, and made from natural ingredients and colorings.🚨 Use code HLV15 for 15% off! (note: I didn’t use Baking Time Club sprinkles for these as I didn’t plant this post far enough in advance to receive them in time, so plan accordingly or have your order rushed).
The basic method to making all of these cute chocolate covered pretzels is the same. You’ll melt 1/2 cup of dark or white chocolate, coat the pretzel in the chocolate, for some of them you’ll fill in the pretzel holes with more melted chocolate (which I will specify in each Halloween creature below), attach the candy eyes, the stems, or pumpkin seeds, sprinkles and let them set up/harden. You’ll get 7-10 of each pretzel character.
Tip: After you coat in the melted chocolate, place on parchment paper and finish decorating.
For these chocolate covered pretzel owls you will need chocolate covered pretzels, either pre-made (I used JoJo’s Chocolate Covered Pretzels) or you can coat your own by melting dark chocolate chips and coating the pretzels in the chocolate. I should have coated them with chocolate on my own, they would have looked nicer, but for ease it was nice to have the pretzels already covered in chocolate.
Add melted chocolate to covered all of the holes, add the eyes and raw pumpkin seeds for the beaks.
I used mini chocolate chips (from Enjoy Life) as the little “eyebrows” above the eyes.
To make the pumpkin pretzels you’ll need to melt 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips and add orange food coloring. Attach the pretzel stems by dipping the end in the melted chocolate and attaching it the the top. Then add a pumpkin seed for the leaf (optional).
For these mummies, first you’ll coat each pretzel in melted white chocolate and add the candy eyes in the top two holes of the pretzel. You can fill those holes with white chocolate and then add the eyes. I like to keep the bottom hole open to look like a mouth.
Allow the pretzels to harden and THEN add the drizzles of chocolate for the mummy cloth look. If you don’t wait until the first layer sets, the strands of white chocolate will blend right in and you’ll end up with a blob.
To make these one-eyed green monsters, you’ll need 1/2 cup vegan/dairy-free white chocolate chips, plant-based green food coloring, green sprinkles, and large candy eyes.
Tip: For these monsters, you’ll want to make sure you decorate the pretzels upside down so that the “heart shape” is the bottom of the monster… if that makes sense.
Tip: It works best to coat the pretzel in the green colored white chocolate, then generously sprinkle the green sprinkles over top (don’t dunk them in) and then add a small dollop of green white chocolate at the top to fasten the eye to the body. I tried to fasten the eye on first and then cover with sprinkles (see the purple monsters below) and I don’t think that method worked quite as well.

I suppose it would have been fun to add a horn on top… feel free to do that when you make these one-eyed purple monsters! Anyway… to make these cuties, you’ll need 1/2 cup vegan/dairy-free white chocolate chips, plant-based purple food coloring, purple sprinkles, and large candy eyes.
Tip: For these monsters, again, you’ll want to make sure you decorate the pretzels upside down so that the “heart shape” is the bottom of the monster… if that makes sense.
